LifeFlight Honors Youths Who Helped Save Boater

Three Bailey Middle School students received Baptist LifeFlight’s LifeSaver Award for helping to save the life of a man whose boat capsized in rough waters in March.

Honored in the April 15 presentation were seventh graders Kyle Arthur, Adrian Glass and Zac Lord. The boys are credited with saving the life of Andreas Reyes, a 26-year-old man whose inflatable boat was swept into Perdido Bay, where it capsized. Baptist LifeFlight and Escambia County Fire-Rescue were called to the scene, but were unable to locate Reyes in the bay’s churning waters. The boys, who were canoeing near the Lillian Bridge, did spot him, however. They paddled to the man, and Zac threw his own life jacket to Reyes. Although their canoe was filling with water, the three stayed with Reyes, helping direct rescuers to him.

Presenting the award, LifeFlight Flight Paramedic Lee Rumbley congratulated the boys for the cool-headed heroics they displayed during the March 23 incident. The LifeFlight LifeSaver Award honors people whose actions have made a significant difference in the safety or well-being of others.

The presentation, which took place at the boys’ school, was broadcast over its closed circuit television system so that other students could watch their three peers receive the recognition. On hand for the ceremony were Jim Sanders, battalion chief for Escambia County Fire-Rescue; Lynn Garrett, a lieutenant with Escambia County Fire Department; and Tim Nagim, president of the Escambia County Professional Fire-fighters Local 4131, which presented each of the boys $100 Wal-Mart gift certificates.
