Primary Stroke Care Center Certification |
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations awarded its Primary Stroke Center designation to Baptist and Gulf Breeze hospitals.
The designation, which comes with the Joint Commissions Gold Seal of Approval, certifies that Baptist and Gulf Breeze meet stringent national standards in their provision of stroke care. The two hospitals were required to undergo on-site reviews, which took place in late March.
Baptist and Gulf Breeze participate in the American Stroke Association's "Get With The Guidelines Stroke" initiative, which addresses the management of acute strokes, the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, the secondary prevention of strokes in those who already have had them, and the establishment of Primary Stroke Centers.
As "Get With The Guidelines" hospitals, Baptist and Gulf Breeze have developed a comprehensive system for providing rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to their emergency departments. This includes being equipped around the clock to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to evaluate patients and using clot-busting medications when appropriate.
The Joint Commission awards its Primary Stroke Center certification for one year, with a second-year extension if a hospital shows it is in compliance with standards and performance measurement and management activities. Subsequent on-site reviews by the Joint Commission will be required every two years to maintain the Primary Stroke Center designation.
