Back-to-School Health Checklist: Helping Your Child Start the School Year Strong

As the new school year approaches, families are busy preparing backpacks, schedules and school supplies. It’s also an important time to focus on your child’s health. Taking a few simple steps now can help prevent illness, reduce stress and support your child’s success both in and out of the classroom.

“Back-to-school season is a natural time to check in on your child’s overall health,” says board-certified family nurse practitioner Megan Carpenter, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, with Baptist Medical Group Primary Care – Airport. “When we take a proactive approach, we can help children feel their best and be ready to learn from day one.”

Here’s a helpful checklist to ensure your family is ready for a healthy start to the school year.

Schedule Annual Wellness Visits and Sports Physicals

An annual checkup is an important part of your child’s overall health. These visits allow your provider to monitor growth and development, review medical history and address any concerns you may have. If your child plans to participate in sports, a physical exam is often required before the season begins. Scheduling early helps ensure your child is ready to safely participate. “Annual visits give us an opportunity to catch potential concerns early and talk through things like sleep, nutrition and development,” Carpenter says.

Stay Up to Date on Immunizations

Vaccinations play a key role in protecting your child and the community. As children grow, they may need additional vaccines to meet school requirements.

Depending on your child’s age, recommended vaccines may include:

  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis)
  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • HPV vaccine

Check Vision and Hearing

Vision and hearing concerns can impact a child’s ability to learn and participate in the classroom.

Signs to watch for include:

  • Frequent headaches or eye strain
  • Difficulty reading or focusing
  • Sitting too close to screens
  • Trouble following directions

Reestablish Healthy Sleep Habits

Consistent sleep is essential for focus, learning and emotional well-being. As school approaches, gradually shift your child’s sleep schedule to match the school routine.

Helpful tips include:

  • Adjust bedtime and wake time in small increments.
  • Limit screen use before bedtime.
  • Create a relaxing nighttime routine.

Encourage Balanced Nutrition

Healthy eating habits support energy, concentration and growth. Aim to:

  • Start the day with a balanced breakfast.
  • Include fruits, vegetables and lean protein in meals.
  • Limit sugary drinks and processed snacks.
  • Pack lunches that provide sustained energy.

Practice Healthy Habits

Classrooms can be a place where germs spread easily. Teaching your child simple hygiene habits can reduce the risk of illness. Encourage your child to:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Avoid sharing drinks or utensils.
  • Stay home when feeling ill.

Supporting Emotional Well-Being

The start of a new school year can bring excitement, but also anxiety for some children. Pay attention to signs of stress, such as:

  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Irritability or withdrawal
  • Reluctance to attend school

Start the Year Off Healthy

A proactive approach to your child’s health can set the tone for a successful school year. By taking time now to schedule checkups, update vaccinations and reinforce healthy habits, you can help your child feel confident, prepared and ready to learn.

“Starting the school year healthy gives children the best opportunity to succeed,” Carpenter says. “We’re here to partner with families every step of the way.”
