Toothache, Turning Point and Second Chance: Robert Perry’s ECMO Story

Robert Perry had a persistent toothache in the spring of 2020. The tooth became infected and later led to a hospital stay. Robert also contracted COVID-19.

Soon his condition deteriorated rapidly. Robert was later intubated, and despite every effort, his oxygen levels did not improve. As his medical team searched for options, one lifesaving possibility remained: ECMO. At the time, Baptist Hospital in Pensacola was the only nearby medical center equipped with the technology.

The first major challenge Robert faced was getting to Pensacola. Severe weather grounded the helicopter that was supposed to transport him, and his oxygen levels were so unstable that an ambulance ride was considered too risky. Miraculously, his oxygen levels stabilized long enough to allow a ground transfer. Robert was transported to Baptist Hospital to undergo the procedure that would placed him on ECMO —  the turning point in his fight for survival.

Robert’s wife and three adult children stood by him through every uncertainty and difficult update. His care team and doctor were with him long after his recovery. Robert cannot remember the names of all but knows there were many others whose skill and compassion played a vital role in saving his life. He hopes his story is carried forward to ensure every member of his ECMO care team is acknowledged for the life‑changing role they played in his journey.

Looking back, Robert says he thanks God every day that he is still alive. Since his treatment, four of his eight grandchildren have been born — moments he believes he would have missed without the Baptist ECMO team. Thanks to the lifesaving ECMO treatment, Robert has witnessed many important family milestones, held his new grandbabies, and returned to the life he once feared he would lose.

Robert’s path is one of resilience, faith and gratitude — a life renewed through the dedication of the Baptist ECMO team and the unwavering love of his family. His story stands as a powerful reminder of how hope can rise even during the darkest chapters.
