PENSACOLA, Fla. (July 6, 2017) - Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute (BHVI) has been awarded the ACTION Registry® Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology. This is a result of their continued dedication, passion and commitment to providing high quality care to cardiovascular patients that are high-risk ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) / Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI).

ECMO provides short-term support for patients with severe conditions such as severe pneumonia, influenza, massive heart attack or massive pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). In such cases when the heart and lungs are too weak to function, ECMO can support the lungs or both the heart and lungs allowing them to recover.

“As the largest cardiovascular program in the region, we are thrilled to be recognized for our commitment to providing quality care.” says Safwan Jaalouk, M.D., chairman, Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute.

The award recognizes BHVI’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that BHVI has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

“As a Silver Performance Award recipient, Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute has shown it is a leader in implementing standards of care and protocols for its patients,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., FACC, FAHA, Chair, ACTION Registry-GWTG Chair; Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Heart and Vascular Center; and Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. “By meeting the requirements set forth in the registry and establishing a culture of providing guideline-recommended therapy, Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute is saving lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.”

To receive the ACTION Registry – GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, BHVI consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG for four consecutive quarters and has performed at the top level of standards for specific performance measures.
