July is UV Safety and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on protecting your skin and prioritizing preventive care. At Baptist Medical Group Family Medicine – Pace, Michelle Narita, M.D., is helping patients understand the importance of skin health and early detection.
Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer—but it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable when caught early. Routine skin checks, both at home and with your primary care provider, play a critical role in identifying changes before they become more serious.
“Many people don’t realize that their primary care provider can be an important first line of defense when it comes to skin health,” says Dr. Narita. “Being aware of changes in your skin and bringing them up during routine visits can make a significant difference.”
Dr. Narita encourages patients to keep an eye on their skin year-round, especially during the summer months when sun exposure is at its highest.
Watch for:
- New or changing moles
- Spots that grow, itch, or bleed
- Irregular borders or uneven color
- Lesions that don’t heal
If you notice anything unusual, it’s important to schedule an evaluation.
Protecting your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple daily habits can go a long way in reducing your risk:
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors
- Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
- Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
- Avoid tanning beds
“Prevention is one of the most powerful tools we have,” Dr. Narita explains. “Small steps taken consistently can significantly reduce long-term risk.”
As a family medicine physician, Dr. Narita provides comprehensive care that includes evaluating skin concerns during routine visits. If needed, she can help guide next steps, including referrals for specialized dermatologic care.
Primary care visits are also an opportunity to:
- Discuss personal and family history of skin cancer
- Review risk factors
- Stay up to date on preventive screenings
Dr. Narita encourages patients to take a proactive approach to their health by incorporating skin awareness into their regular wellness routine.
“Taking a few extra minutes to check your skin—or bringing up a concern at your appointment—can have a lasting impact on your health,” she says. “Early detection truly saves lives.”
