ECMO Survivors, Families and Caregivers Reunite at Baptist Hospital Celebration
ECMO survivors, their families and caregivers gathered at the Bear Family Foundation Health Center for a heartfelt reunion that highlighted resilience, gratitude and shared experiences. Hosted by the Baptist Hospital ECMO care team, the event brought together former patients and loved ones for an evening of connection, reflection and celebration.
Attendees shared personal stories of recovery, reconnected with the clinicians who supported them through critical illness, and reflected on the journey from life-saving treatment to renewed health. The gathering created a space for attendees to reflect on their experiences with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a highly specialized therapy used to support patients with critical health conditions.
“This event was a powerful reminder of why we do this work,” said Beau Pollard, vice president and administrator of Baptist Hospital. “To see our patients thriving and surrounded by their loved ones is incredibly meaningful for our entire care team.”
The evening emphasized fellowship and support, as survivors and families met others who understand the challenges and triumphs associated with ECMO treatment. Caregivers and clinical team members were also present to offer encouragement and celebrate the long-term outcomes of patients they once treated in critical care settings.
Nine years ago, Baptist was the first in the area to offer the lifesaving treatment. The ECMO reunion reflects the organization’s commitment to patient-centered care that extends beyond hospitalization to foster lasting relationships and continued support for patients and their families.
